What is Lasix?
Lasix is a prescription drug from the class of medications known as loop diuretics. Diuretics in general can be used for treating a number of conditions, such as edemas and hypertension in the majority of cases. The loop diuretics got their name because of the part of the kidney they act on, which is the loop of Henle. More precisely, they act on a symporter and inhibit the reabsorption of chloride and sodium. By doing this, loop diuretics also inhibit the reabsorption of calcium and magnesium as these depend on the reabsorption of sodium and chloride. As they do this, they decrease the osmotic driving force of water which is responsible for taking the water out of the collecting duct system. In turn, the production of urine is significantly increased. Also, they decrease the amount of water that is reabsorbed into the blood stream which decreases blood volume, which ultimately results in the drop in blood pressure and the alleviation of edemas. As Lasix is a loop diuretic, its mechanism of action is the one that we explained.
Lasix in particular is primarily prescribed for two conditions: hypertension and edema. It is in fact the medication of choice for patients who are suffering from edema that was caused by congestive heart failure. It is also prescribed for patients whose edema is the result of hepatic cirrhosis, nephritic syndrome and renal impairment. It is also often prescribed to patients whose blood pressure needs to be lowered.
We are all well aware how dangerous hypertension can be and there is need to have all the help possible in treating this condition. Hypertension is the number one reason for premature deaths in the developed countries, due to the complications that can arise from hypertension, such as cardiac episodes that are often fatal. In itself, hypertension affects the quality of life and life expectancy in a negative way, even if it does not result in cardiovascular diseases and events.
Edema is a condition that is characterized by the buildup of fluids in different parts of the body, and depending on the part of the body they appear, edemas can be very dangerous. They are caused by different medical conditions, mostly heart failure, diseases of the kidneys and liver, and other causes that impair the normal expulsion of fluids from the body. Lasix is particularly effective at treating edema which is caused by congestive heart failure.Once you start taking Lasix, it is important that you do not suffer from deficiency of elements and substances that are expelled more due to use of Lasix. It is also important to keep in mind that Lasix has to be taken exactly as prescribed, as the changes you make on your own and that concern your regimen can only harm your health. You should also discuss the proper way of taking Lasix and how to avoid interactions with other medications. Also, if you are taking Lasix for hypertension, you should also do everything possible to lower the blood pressure, like for example exercise regularly and avoid unhealthy foods.
